A Textbook Riddle
Thereby it hangs upon a tale,
a tale untrue or one true told.
Its nature—droning, prosy, stale—
can turn the heated critic cold.
Though inessential to a book,
its presence often makes it whole.
It stands one-legged ’neath its hook
with nary a toe nor callused sole.

I dashed this off yesterday morning at the breakfast table while working through one of my large-print crossword puzzles. I usually reserve Saturday mornings for a brisk constitutional along the water, but the blistering heat here in the Persian Gulf has made that an unpleasant prospect.
