I have a unique writing style that I think you might find interesting. I don’t confine myself to a single genre. I generally write magical realism—often situated in fascinating periods of history (e.g. Weimar Germany, the Medieval Balkans, the Ottoman Empire). But I also write ghost stories set in the here and now; and a few set in “the hereafter.” I’ve dabbled in science-fiction, but the kind of science-fiction I write is somewhat Orwellian and Kafkaesque. I have an idea for two traditional (“space ships and droids”) science-fiction stories—a novella and novel—that I hope to start within the next year or two.
I would characterize my themes and subject matter as eerie and macabre, but not cruel. I don’t shy away from addressing important moral and ethical issues, but I have no axes to grind nor gospels to preach. However mystical and woo-woo some of my works might seem, they’re simply stories and they’re meant to be entertaining. I prefer to keep my narratives short and to the point. I’m not writing to earn a buck or to pad out a word count. (No Victorian triple-deckers here, thank you.) I just want to share these tales with you!
Substack is new to me, so I’m going to be starting out slow—maybe posting a story every other week. I have an idea for a quirky series of essays focusing on the topic of antiquarian book collecting, which is a separate hobby of mine and something I’m passionate about.
